Gerry Quinn – HMS Bulldog
“HMS Bulldog” undertook some of the most dangerous surveys possible due to her having to conduct towed Sonar Sweeps up and down and across the main shipping lanes of the English Channel from July 1977 to March 1978. Radio warnings were given frequently to all shipping in the area.
It was an eventful time, especially each night but it was enjoyable, and, as a Leading Seaman (Survey Recorder) I undertook the Fair Sheet drawing of the Main Hydrographic Chart of the English Channel, a copy of which still proudly hangs on the wall in my house.
It took 1 year to draw the Fair Sheet by hand conducted outside of watchkeeping hours…
